Officials Will Drain Green Water in Rio Olympics Diving Pool

Officials have announced they are going to drain the murky green water from one of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics pools at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center.

The water turned green five days ago, and officials decided to give up on cleaning and go with the draining process instead.

Following the draining, they will transfer about 1 million gallons of clean water from another practice pool into it before the start of synchronized swimming, as the athletes will be underwater for long periods of time during this event.

The whole process will take approximately 10 hours and should be completed by 7 a.m. on Sunday.

A smaller pool nearby that remains murky will still be used for the diving competition, as a spokesman for the event said the green water poses no health risks for the athletes.
